Scope and content

Has heard Beaton has had a great success as Cecil Gray. Asks Beaton to make enquiries for him about rooms at the Plaza. Wonders if Beaton knows anywhere else he could stay. Worries about money and feels he should budget carefully before he starts. Thinks they have a wonderful cast for Importance. Discusses the cast. They have moved C and P to the Globe where it goes well. The notices for "Our Betters" are very mixed. Most of the 'silly critics' attack the play and praise the acting. Thinks it should be the other way around. Bobby Helpmann is back from Portugal and is to play Oberon to Rawlings' Titania at Covent Garden in Purcell's "Fairie Queene". Asks for the 'dirt' on Malfi. Lear is not good apart from the Fool played by Alec Guiness. Larry is clever and complete in his characterisation, but the production is 'vile and also the rest of the acting'. Discusses Roger Furse's scenery and dresses. They have 'no speed or drive'. The critics are 'lyrical'. Hopes he is not jealous. Sibyl Colefax is still in hospital, but 'unflaggingly directing operations' from her couch.
