Scope and content
Was delighted to get Beaton's letter with all the Windermere news. Hears that Beaton is playing Cecil Gray himself. Would love to see him do it and will be fascinated to hear of the reception. Is glad Penelope is good. Noel and Binkie always believed in her. Took some Americans to the Haymarket yesterday. They are still doing £1800 a week. The performance was good. Dorothy 'tweets more like a canary than ever' and Isabel's walk 'splays outwards with a strange totter'. "Crime and Punishment" does well. Will not be sorry when Edith retires to her barge on the Nile as she is a depressing influence on the atmosphere. Hopes Rosalind Atkinson will make a success. Discusses other projects he hopes to do soon. London is not particularly gay. The American ballet boys are not stepping out despite invitations. The women in it are unattractive. Beattie and Gingold have been ill and absent from their shows. Terry has gone to the South of France with Kenneth Morgan. Helpmann has been very bitter about C and P. He has been ill and walking with a stick and has now gone to Portugal with Michael Benthall. Helpmann has taken up the American option. Discusses difficulties of the play in New York. Discusses Terry.
