Scope and content

Apologises for not having written before. Discusses the rates that American and British "Vogue" are now paying. Harry has arranged a bonus for Beaton. They are having to run the business in a much more restricted manner. They are paying Beaton the same as their American photographers. Discusses general wage conditions in America. They have suffered from a loss of advertising. Is aware that other magazines could pay Beaton more. Discusses Beaton's work after the war. Thinks they should feel their way carefully because the 'old business about the Jewish episode still rankles'. Recently heard of an advertiser who almost cancelled their contract because they saw that "Vogue" was using Beaton photographs. They are feeling the war conditions more all the time. They are expecting Horst and Rawlings to be called into the armed services, but so far they have not. The circulation of magazines is doing well. They have increased their non-fashion features. Have lost two staff to the Red Cross. Is spending spare time working on the British War Relief drive. Tells Beaton not to be severe on himself about the look of his photographs.
