Scope and content
Rose has turned again to Beaton when he is in trouble. He has not forgotten that he helped Beaton before the war, but Beaton has not since reminded him of the times he has paid his debts and helped him to continue painting. Beaton tried very hard to launch Rose and his work in London during the war. Since then their rare meetings have conformed to the sane pattern, with Beaton acting as "a buffer between you and reality". Rose has more than once insinuated that he would commit suicide if Beaton did not help him. He has shown no gratitude of any kind. Beaton has received a vague letter from Rose's son to say that he is ill. Perhaps Rose's doctor would contact him to say what is wrong with him.
