Scope and content

Thanks Beaton for his "helpful" birthday present. Wanted to write but waited to have something to tell him. Has painted this summer thanks to the Artists' Benevolent Association. Has already finished 12 large oil pictures and a quantity of drawings. Unfortunately he is unable to take the job because of his ill health. Brighton is the only town in England that he likes. Goes often to the theatre. Discusses the people in Brighton. The town is fascinating "if one keeps away from groups". The light and colour is quite unique. He still has to live on the assistance at present. The portrait Beaton got back from Paris has just been sold. Discusses his problems with Cleo. Is desperate as he has his life work and he can do nothing about it. Asks Beaton for help. It would please him to show him the new paintings. His birthday party was his happiest for many years. Asks Beaton what the Nordic lands are like.
