Scope and content

Is sorry he is not going to the N. Gallery tonight, but his play is opening. Has missed Beaton's friendship over the last years. Regrets their long estrangement. The first thing he asked about when they asked him to direct "The Chalk Garden" was whether Beaton's décor would be used. Wanted to go to New York to see it, but Binkie said that he and Enid did not wish it to be used in London. He said that Edith had not been happy over "Heartbreak House" and must not be upset as she was in a bad state of health at that time. Beaton was occupuied in Hollywood with the film. Dislikes having to blame others, but as Beaton thought it was Gielgud's doing, he feels he must give him the facts. Sends good wishes for Beaton's exhibition.
