Scope and content
Was delighted with Beaton's décor for "Love's Labour" and thinks the press and general attitude towards it has been stupid and unfair. Praises the design and costumes. The only costume he didn't like was the King's, but he is a beastly actor (Porter) and wore it badly. The play is extraordinary. Discusses the play. The other production was busy and cheap. This one 'with all it's inadequacy of verbal virtuosity' still seemed sincere and beautiful. Hopes Beaton won't let himself be depressed by the 'ignorance of people who have no eyes and fail to bring their imaginations in line with yours'. Found Beaton's part of the play 'well-nigh perfect'. Is filming sporadically with Larry and begninning to relax after the long run. Discusses the play, "The Matchmaker". Expresses disappointment in Mankiewicz's new film, "Barefoot Contessa". Is hoping to go to Paris with Esme for a long weekend. Is spending Christmas in Jamaica with Noel. Has taken a house with Hugh Wheeler about nine miles from Noel for January and February. Suggests Beaton come to Jamaica to visit.
