Scope and content
Writes regarding the "distressing" paragraph in Walter Winchell's column. Beaton's publishers Lippincott said they would prefer to do nothing about it without a direct request from Beaton. Feels that if he reopened the issue it might be given the wrong slant. Thought that the best thing to do would be for Frank [Crowninshield] to write to Winchell. The enclosed letter is already in the mail. Asks Beaton how he is and how his writing is going. Enclosed letter from Frank to Walter Winchell refutes the latter's claim that Beaton sent a specially bound copy of Vogue to Goebbels in Germany. Explains that Beaton has already suffered much from his "lamentable indiscretion". Hopes that Winchell will explain "the true facts of the case" to his readers when the opportunity arises.
