Scope and content
Refers to Beaton's resignation over three months earlier regarding the anti-Semitic incident. Regrets that he cannot ask him to rejoin their staff. Is distressed that this situation could ever have arisen. Is ready to believe that Beaton is not really anti-Semitic, but he created a very difficult and "distasteful" situation. If it had been a personal matter he might have forgotten it, but as a publisher he cannot sponsor a "fling at a tragic situation upon which the attention of the whole world is riveted". Wants Beaton to know that this decision caused great unhappiness for him and for all the staff who have worked with him. Will always follow his work with great interest. Hopes that the ending of their relationship has no permanent ill effect on Beaton's career.
