Asks if Beaton received his card, posted from the last sailing of any French Liner. Sister has the role of Hippolyta in the Charrell black and white version of Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream". Edward James is taking them to the opening. Charles James has done some of the dresses. Edward James is taking flying lessons in case he has to fly for England. His doctor says he wouldn't be accepted because of his health record. Finds it incredible that the 'U.S. has never been so gay and prosperous', but is as guilty as the rest. They gave a huge halloween party with people coming from all over. Pavlik's studio is too small for him to work in and the sun comes in at the wrong time. Leonor and the Dalis are caught in a small French town near the Spanish border. Gertrude is at an apple farm near them and paints for an exhibition in the spring. Has just finished a new poem and is adapting a work of fiction for the stage. Encloses a snapshot of Orson Welles. They long to have Beaton's impression of war time. Joseph Cornell is about to have a one-man first show.
