Scope and content
Thanks Beaton for his letter, telegrams and clippings. Discusses the King of Belgium's visit. Liz danced with him at the Ball and is going to the 'Four Hundred' with him when he returns in December. Marriage is 'out of the question' and they fear his intentions are not honourable. Queen Mary went to lunch with Linda (?) last Sunday and during the afternoon, a thick fog descended. People thought she would have to stay the night, but she insisted on returning and 'police with flaming torches lined the great west road for her'. Describes a charity performance of "Macbeth" that was performed at the Old Vic as 'thoroughly unsatisfactory'. The cast included Laurence Olivier and Judith Anderson. The witches wore cardboard faces with 'Hitler moustaches'. Lilian Baylis's death has shocked everyone. Discusses the Windsors. Is going to send Beaton a copy of her engagement book so he may know what is going on in Wiltshire.
