Discusses difficulties of her arrival in Lisbon. The Fieldings were not there to meet her. When they came at last they said they had got the time wrong. Describes Daphne's appearance. Xan was 'more impeccable than ever'. Iris arrived in her Volkswagen from Malaga. Iris and Daphne know lots of people belonging to the David Tennant 'set'. David Tennant's new wife is 'odious to him'. Describes their way of life. Discusses various arrivals. Describes the drunkeness of the Lees Mayols. Xan had to drive them home, 'none too sober himself'. Went to bed exhausted and bored, but was then haunted by the thought of Daphne's anxiety. Decided to 'sit the vigil through with her'. Daphne eventually phoned the Mayols 'to be answered by her dear's own voice saying they were all drinking merrily.'
