Gives thanks for a book on locomotives and gives a description of a railway journey from Kobe to Tokyo. Also comments on the equivalent journey made by a British destroyer. Was offered a voyage to the Behring seal grounds but was unable to go due to 'foolish' University meetings. Has been asked to acquire '1000 Japanese skulls (not human)' for the British Museum. Notes that the Japanese middle-class 'behave worse and worse to foriegners, especially to ladies, at whom they spit and shout the foulest adjectives.' Believes that the Japanese will get an 'inevitable thrashing' by the Russians soon. Believes that Japan is 'the only place in history where Englishmen have patiently submitted to insulting treatment from an Asiatic race.'
