Item 4 - Typescript letter, signed, from Bernard Lovell (Jodrell Bank, University of Manchester) to FH (c/o Anglo-Australian Telescope Project Office, Department of Education and Science, Canberra, Australia)

FH's letter of 14 Feb. filled him with 'dismay'. Wonders if anything can be done 'to save the situation at this late hour'. Had hoped that they were 'getting astronomy moving in the U.K. but recently everything seems to be collapsing like a pack of cards'. Has 'never attempted to understand the internal Cambridge political situation', but would 'really like to know what happened' this time. Describes how he was supposed to be on the Board of Electors for 1971, but stopped receiving enquiries about arranging a meeting in the summer, and in Sep. Graham Smith 'remarked that he had been appointed an elector'. Has had 'no explanation from anyone in Cambridge about these events'.
