Was surprised by the outcome of the 'recent election' and 'still more surprised' by FH's letter. Had 'hope to gain some understanding' of FH's 'unique mind' by working together with him. Can see 'good coming out of a strained situation' if FH and Geoffrey and Margaret Burbidge 'set up a larger observational and theoretical centre of excellence' at Herstmonceux. FH's 'earlier attempts to destroy' Herstmonceux were 'unrealistic', but would welcome 'the breeze of fresh ideas' and would encourage Cambridge students to go there. FH's decision is 'sad indeed' for Cambridge. Views it as his duty to prove that the best man did win the election. Proposes that he and FH spend 'at least a few days walking the hills together' in the near future, as neither of them know each other much. Supported Hoyle when he stood for the Headship of DAMTP. Enjoyed FH's presidential address on the changing value of G.
