Scope and content
Typescript essay, in which Beaton recounts a visit to New York during the Second World War. In particular, he notes the stark contrast between the shabbiness he has experienced in London and other parts of the United States, and the glamour and luxury of New York. Beaton comments on how detached New York seems from world events. While a certain lack of inspiration and creativity is evident in the world of entertainment, art anf fashion more generally, New York has maintained its high standards. Beaton concludes that, though the city has become very remote in recent years, it is good to know that, when travelling becomes possible again, New York will be as exciting as it has always been.
