Scope and content

Was kind of Beaton to write. Rather jibbed at some of the scenes in the film and was glad he didn't have to act them on a stage. Resnais is such a sensitive director that Gielgud did those bits without too much embarrassment. Wishes the first part of the picture was a bit less obscure, but it is striking and original. A Polish critic said it was a failure in his country but that it was the nearest approach to Proust that he had seen. Resnais is wonderful to work with. Is delighted to hear that Beaton is able to work again. Longs to come and see Beaton, but it is such a long drive.
