Beaton's letter arrived today. Was unable to sleep last night and saw the Hindenburg fly past, "silvery and like a planet covered with glory". The heatwave is preventing him sleeping. Envies Beaton being in London. There is no change in Lexington Avenue between January and July except for "snow which becomes dust in summer". Went to the rehearsal of "Orphé" yesterday. It is extraordinary what Balauchine has done in a few days' work. Praises the choreography. Pavlik is making a "revolution". Informs Beaton of his plans. Has a return ticket for a German boat. Plans to go to Alsace with his son Vania and come to Beaton at the end of July if that suits him. However his plans depend on Raimond sending him $200 before the 1st of June. It is "senseless" to spend the summer in the USA. Discusses his plans for his son. Tells Beaton about the colonel Etienne de Basil's throat operation. Insisted to de Basil that Beaton was "the right man for the right thing" because he understands his "pastelle" quality. Questions Beaton about their friends. Asks him if he is going to Paris before coming here. Discusses the possibility of coming to England. This letter will reach him ten days before sailing back.
