Scope and content

Sends his congratulations to JWW on the reputation acquired by his book [An Historical and Critical Enquiry into the Interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures, with Remarks on Mr. Bellamy's New Translation]. Notes the decision of a mutual acquaintance, Fallows, to go as a missionary to Africa and believes it a brave decision to leave behind all his family and friends. Hopes Fallow's wife is made of strong stuff as he believes 'women are worse to transplant than any species of timber'. Describes his journey from Marseilles to Paris via Nimes, 'the most interesting town in France to a classical scholar', following Hannibal's journey to Chambery, Geneva and Morges. States that Switzerland would be his favoured country to live in after 'Old England'. Is derogatory of France and the French, believing the men to be irreligious, 'a consequence of the Revolution'. Notes the attempt to form a Constitutional Society in England but doubts the benefits of such an institution as it will only cause factionalism and conflict. Gives an indication of his route back to England and his plans to return to Cambridge.
