Is still in Florence staying with a local family. Has been to a 'country farm of theirs to attend the wedding of one of their peasants' and gives a description. Discusses an acquaintance's work on astronomy and also attempts to court a lady through poetry. Describes the billeting of Austrian and German soldiers in Florence on their way to put down the Italian rebellion in Naples and comments 'the scenes afforded by their arrival are amusing enough ... if one could but get rid of one's indignation.' Gives news of other Cambridge men he has met in Italy
