These reports are the sole record, the dissertations themselves having been returned to the applicants in most cases (there are some dissertations extant). They are invaluable for the revealing contemporary academic opinions on the subjects discussed. From 1978 onwards the reports were retained in the Master's files on each elected Fellow and those on unsuccessful applicants destroyed.
