Note

Mrs Susan [or Susanna] Hill bequeathed, 1638, after the discharge of various personal legacies, the residue of her estate worth £600 to purchase lands to be settled upon Christ’s Hospital (or to be continued for posterity in some other way by her executors with legal advice). Out of the lands two poor scholars of Christ’s or St. John’s, with preference to sons of ministers [i.e. clergy] were to be maintained as far as the status of M.A, and four widows of clergy, the scholars and widows to receive equal shares.
Two messuages in Great Wood St. London, were bought by Susan [Susannah] Hill's exectuor, William Greenhill, in 1638 and another in 1642. They were granted by him to the College in 1646, which leased them back to him. This rent provided for the beneficiaries of the endowment. In 1843 the property was purchased as no. 22 Wood St. by the City of London for £1833. 5s (see Fine Book, SB7.2, p.125, and Conclusion Book, Deed Book, 12 Oct. 1843, pp.130-43). In the 1882 statutes, p.123, the property of the benefaction is described as 23 Wood St., then still owned, but sold in 1901 (Deed Book p.79) for £21,700. The Scholarships ceased under provisions of statutes of 1860, but payment to the annuitants, the clergy widows, continued in the rentals until 1944-45.
