Note

Rev. Ambrose Gilbert gave the messuage of the Marsh House and its lands and woods in St. Osyth Essex, to fund one fellowship and one scholarship with preference 1) to the Gilberts 2) to the Turkintons 3) to Colchester School 4) to the town of Orsett 5) to the county of Essex. The will was disputed by Gilbert's sister and heir (Margaret Holden or Malden). To avoid a law-suit the College agreed to release to her attorney, Sir Edmund Pierce, its claim to the property in exchange for a rent charge of £18 from it, to support instead two scholarships, declaring that the revenues would not support one fellowship and one scholarship. The foundation was subsumed in the scholarships created under the statutes of 1860. Gilbert also gave to the Library a large quantity of very select books (SJGR/5/1/1, p.18), for which carriage and transport to the library was paid in 1632 (SJAR/3/2/4, f. 338r).
