Note
Bequest (27 April 1712) of an estate at Alston-cum-Hothersall, to found one exhibition, subject to an annuity of £5 to his sister Margaret Singleton during her widowhood, in default of other support; and, after bequests to his relatives, the rest of his money and debts owing to him, to found 2 more exhibitions. These 2 exhibitions were to be held by two students in Divinity of ten years standing in the University, not fellows, not being absent from College for more than one month each year. The preferences for these awards were (1) to those poor named Sancroft related to William Sancroft, Archbishop of Canterbury, ‘my patron’, (2) the issue of children of the late Sir John Stapley, bart. in Sussex, (3) the issue of his sister Margaret, and late sister Ellin, Singleton, (4) ‘Nadens of my father’s kindred’, (5) men of the greatest merit born within the Province of Canterbury. £800 of the benefaction was spent towards purchasing Granhams Manor and farm, Great Shelford, Cambridgeshrie, bought in 1714
