Note
Sir Ambrose Cave bequeathed in trust a total £20 rent-charge on land at, and in the neighbourhood of, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, for four scholars in divinity at Oxford and Cambridge. The trustees included Sir William Cecil, Lord Burghley. The trustees granted the rent-charge to be divided to support 2 scholarships each at Magdalen College Oxford and St John's College, Cambridge. St John's referred to these scholarships as 'Cave's exhibitions'. The bequest carried a preference for kindred of the founder. This preference was abolished in 1860, when the exhibitions were merged in the new scholarships and exhibitions of the College.
