Note
Thomas Braithwait of Ambleside in 1674 gave £30 for Third Court and bequeathed £250 for 2 scholarships (later called exhibitions, c.1692), by preference: in the first instance to pupils of Kendal and Hawkshead schools (the latter founded by Archbishop Edwin Sandys, once of St John's); in the second instance, to pupils of any school in Westmorland or Lancashire. The last exhibitioners were elected in 1857 and 1858, the benefaction transmuted into funds for open scholarships under statutes of 1860.
