Note
James Beresford gave St. John's in 1520 £400 to endow 2 fellowships and 2 scholarships, limited firstly to those of the founder's name and kin; or, secondly, to natives of the parishes of Chesterfield, Worksworth or Ashbourne, Derbyshire, or Alconsfield, Staffordshire; or thirdly to those born in Staffordshire or Derbyshire. If no-one could be found to meet any of those conditions, the fellows and scholars should be chosen from among the members of Cambridge University
