Scope and content
George Baker bequeathed £1,300 for charitable purposes. With the agreement of the executors, through the influence of Thomas Baker, agreement was drawn up for two exhibitions for St John's in 1701 (SJGR/5/2/6/1-2), amended to six in 1710, preference to 1) founder's kin 2) pupil of Durham School (SJGR/5/2/6/3). With the money, farms at Thorley and Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, were bought, and sold for £1,900 in 1899. In 1861 the preference for kindred was removed, and the 6 exhibitions were replaced with an unspecified number worth £30 each (Statutes, 1860, 59).
