Scope and content

Heard yesterday from Dr Sharpe that the Directorship of the Institute has been given to Redman from 1 Aug. to 30 Sep. 1972, and to Lynden-Bell from 1 Oct. 1972 to 30 Sep. 1974. Lyttleton offered to take on the post of Director as a caretaker until the new Plumian Professor was in residence; the decision to appoint Lynden-Bell therefore bears out the view that he 'was told from the outset that he would be the Director'. The appointment of the new Assistant Registrar is 'about as tactless and impolitic a move as could be introduced', but it is 'the final clarification of the whole scheme'.
