Scope and content

Kept by Guillebaud in manila envelope. Most of the press cuttings were supplied by press cuttings bureaux (slips attached). Contents: i) Typescript letter (signed), from Henry Clay, Fairview, Kingston Avenue, Didsbury, Manchester, to Guillebaud, 14 June 1927, with typescript copy of his review prepared on request for Cambridge University Press (1 p., 2 p.);

ii) Typescript copy of Henry Clay's review, apparently typed by Guillebaud himself, with autograph addition '(sgd) Henry Clay' (3 p.);

iii) Autograph letter, Henry Clay (as above) to Guillebaud, 18 June 1927. Comments on importance of book 'in a field in which nothing of first-rate importance has been published' and expresses surprise that the subject did not command general recognition; 'if in Cambridge it failed to, it confirms my feeling that the analytical teaching that Cambridge has developed and does so extraordinarily well needs supplementing by a critical and historical study of economic institutions'. Sympathises with his feeling about the Press's suggestions; book could be shortened, but 'this particular book will not bear such delay, and it is not the type of half-baked compilation that P.S. King and the American university presses pour out in such numbers'; further advice on the manuscript and comments on publication price. Has he collected enough material for an article on the German Economic Council? Doesn't believe in this current proposal for a National Industrial Council, 'and I am constantly having the German precedent quoted against me. I know nothing about it, and I wish you would inform me and the British public';
