Typescript extract, p.1 missing, in which Beaton questions the idea of public taste. He refuses to believe that British public taste is as bad as the manufacturers or their advisors, or buyers, believe it to be. Everyone knows that the quality of much British material is very good, but the matter of taste is a separate issue. It requires a bold artist to battle against prevailing bad taste to create new ideas. For Beaton, the artist Sir Francis Rose (1909-1979) has produced designs which demonstrate qualities of inventiveness, sensitivity, and delicacy - work that can be readily exported with great confidence.
