Scope and content

Press cutting featuring a reproduction of the drawing by J. Miles Verrall of Swannanoa, entitled 'The Late Samuel Butler: A Pencil Snapshot'. Jones notes: 'Butler had a photographic reproduction of the original on his mantelpiece. He kept it there till about 1897 when it was so yellow & dirty that he destroyed it. If I remember right it was done at Mentone in 1869-1870 & there may be something about the long haired boy in one of his letters, but it is not in the Memoir'.
