Scope and content
Includes correspondence relating to Beaton's work on "Portrait of a Lady" and "The Chalk Garden". Also some minor reference to Beaton's work on "Quadrille". Based on the 1881 novel by Henry James, "Portrait of a Lady" was performed at the ANTA Theatre in New York City in 1954, and starred Jennifer Jones as Isabel Archer. "The Chalk Garden" is a play by Enid Bagnold, which premiered at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway, on 26 October 1955. Noel Coward's play, "Quadrille", played on Broadway in 1955 and starred Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Beaton went on to win the Award for Best Costume Designer for his work on "Quadrille" at the 9th Annual Tony Awards (March 1955).
