Biographical history

Admitted pensioner at St John's 1873; B.A. 1877; M.A. 1894; K.C.B. 1911; J.P. for Northumberland; High Sheriff 1910; President of the British Association 1919; F.R.S. 1898; Designed and built The Turbinia , the first turbine driven vessel, 1894. It is through his work that the turbine became the prime mover for the generation of electricity in the largest power stations and for the propulsion of the largest and fastest vessels.
