Methods of Mathematical Physics, co-authored by the Jeffreys, became one of the most influential and widely used textbooks providing 'an account of those parts of pure mathematics that are most frequently needed in physics'. The review of the first edition in the Proceedings of the Physical Society concluded, 'There must be very few major techniques in theoretical physics which are not explained here and illustrated by some genuine examples. It remains, and is likely to continue for many years, an almost indispensable work of reference for anyone attempting research in theoretical physics.' It ran to a number of subsequent editions, including a paperback edition in 1972, was also reprinted, most recently in 1999, and was translated into a number of languages. The material presented here should be consulted in conjunction with the documentation preserved in Sir Harold's archive.
