On taking the boat out to try the new engines, they were surprised to find that the bottom of the boat was covered in small muscles and barnacles, as a result only 21 knots were attained, a lower speed than expected.
He hopes to reach a compromise with Sir W. H. White with regard to his 'rule of two-thirds full speed of revolutions astern', and is also looking for a site with room for both engine works and some shipbuilding. He has made observations regarding resistance in the model as compared to the Turbinia. Proposes that the next alterations will be 'increased chimney and airways', also putting on the new propellers.
Has carried out some 'tests on the model towed by a weight and wheel and axle', in order to deduce 'the resistance on Froude's method'. The Turbinia is having two additional screw shafts fitted and seatings for new motors. Diagram at head of first page illustrating Lawrence's speed indicator.
He will be going to Holyhead to see a boat, the Violet, that he hopes to improve by the installation of turbine machinery. The trials have been hampered by the weather. Meanwhile the Viper is receiving finishing touches.
The Viper's coal consumption trial has gone well, at 31 knots she has achieved the lowest coal consumption of any destroyer. She is due to go out again to test consumption at 32.5 knots. The Cobra has one more trial 'before being handed over'. He anticipates that at Wallsend they should be able to produce machinery at reduced cost due to specialist equipment.
