Princess Alice, duchess of Gloucester. Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from London.

Apologises for not answering his letter for so long. Thanks him for the kind offer of a sketch as a present. If Beaton sends a sketch to the newspaper she would like to see it first. Thought that two of the photographs were very charming, though some people felt she looked "somewhat hard". Will write again later about the sketch.

Alice (1901-2004) Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester

Portrait of a Lady / The Chalk Garden

Includes correspondence relating to Beaton's work on "Portrait of a Lady" and "The Chalk Garden". Also some minor reference to Beaton's work on "Quadrille". Based on the 1881 novel by Henry James, "Portrait of a Lady" was performed at the ANTA Theatre in New York City in 1954, and starred Jennifer Jones as Isabel Archer. "The Chalk Garden" is a play by Enid Bagnold, which premiered at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway, on 26 October 1955. Noel Coward's play, "Quadrille", played on Broadway in 1955 and starred Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Beaton went on to win the Award for Best Costume Designer for his work on "Quadrille" at the 9th Annual Tony Awards (March 1955).

Playscripts and Field Notebooks

Includes the unpublished typescripts of four plays by Beaton, and three wartime notebooks. Between 1940 and 1945, Beaton was comissioned by the British Ministry of Information to document the Second World War at home and abroad. Beaton's wartime work comprises seven thousand photographs, which are now held by the Imperial War Museum. In addition to photographing London during the Blitz, Beaton travelled through North Africa, Iraq, Palestine, Transjordan and Syria. He left for India in 1943, and visited China in 1944.
