Typescript letter signed to Beaton, from Santa Monica

He and Don are very sad to hear that Kin is leaving England. Knows that the climate can be a strain and thinks he would not be able to stand it permanently himself. Misses Don terribly when he is in New York. Don returned about ten days ago and is now settling down to paint. In New York he was finishing off a series of portraits of the members of the New York City Ballet. Isherwood has finished his semester as a professor at UCLA. Is thinking about writing another autobiographical book. May go and work with Tony Richardson on the film play of "Le Marin de Gibraltar". Has found a letter from Beaton in his not-answered tray. Gives his permission for Beaton to reprint some of his comments on Beaton's 'Images' in "US Camera".

Typescript letter signed to Beaton, from San Francisco.

Wants to mail the introduction to Beaton today. Then Beaton could call him about it on Saturday morning and they can agree any alterations. If Beaton does not like it, he must not hesitate to tell Isherwood so. Yesterday he met Kin for a drink. Expected him to be more slim and angular. Thinks he may have 'superimposed the image of Peter Watson'. Is getting into the 'vortex of work' as students manuscripts appear. May go to Nevada after all.

Misses Beaton sadly. Lists the guests of her Christmas party. Box's programme is to stay in bed all day and for everyone to come and talk to her. She nearly drove Vita mad last summer, requiring her constant presence. Has not seen Joe. He is lodging with David and is 'as noisy, argumentative and tiresome as usual'. Gerald's visit was a success. Discusses Gerald. Asks if Beaton will send her a tinned ham. Will speak to Maud about the money she owes Beaton for the Paisley stuff.

Rode over to Reddish this morning. Liked the ride and plans to do it on a morning when Beaton is there so he can arrive in time for breakfast. Juliet showed him the pictures of the room and flowers. Asks if he can have the one of Willie and Beaton for his scrap book. Was pleased to see Beaton at the Marlowe factory on Monday.

May possibly call on Beaton on Saturday to be photographed. It is good of Beaton to wish to include her in his exhibition this autumn. Asks if Beaton could enlarge the photograph he took of her on a seat at Cap Ferrat in case she does not make it on Saturday.

Thanks Beaton for his delightful letter. Hopes Beaton did not have to pay on the Lunt's birds. Was amused that customs considered Lady P's present as junk. Was surprised at H. Andrews being good as Enobarbus. Discusses her evening at 'Much Ado' last week. Took Diana to supper at John's which 'thrilled' him. They are going to Brighton on Monday to see Terry's "Deep Blue Sea". They sat up and listened to Rab Butler's broadcast which was 'admirable, and beautifully delivered'. The Paris excitement is Mauriacs attack on Jean's play. Has heard that Edith de Beaumont is dying. Asks to hear about Enid's play. Can never quite forgive her for 'her obtuseness in writing that idiotic vulgar book about Diana'. Saw Stephen Tennant the other afternoon, 'as fat as a pig'. He was on his way to see Siegfried.

Thanks Beaton for letter and clippings. Praises New York and makes a list of things that are only in New York. On Saturday the Duchess of Gloucester open or shut something in Salisbury. They are all working at the Municipal Elections in Wilton in order to secure votes for Edith. Discusses her weekend. People say that the Duchess of Gloucester does her public work admirably and is extremely popular. Is rushing to tell Beaton all of her news before driving Edith's supporters to the polls. Is going to 'fuss' over an exhibition of Nijinsky's drawings tomorrow. Has heard that the plays are very poor this autumn. Caroline was 'excellent' in hers but it is dying quickly. Discusses the play. Natasha and Jack are here and David had a cocktail with them last week.

Was amused by Beaton's conversation with Miss Case. Thinks she is naïve. The King's death has been a shock to everyone. Patricia rang up the Queen Mother and she said it had been a shock for them all, as he had seemed well the day before. Thinks that the new Queen Elizabeth will 'do the job admirably'. Lady Ampthill wrote that Queen Mary was heroic but 'heartbreaking to see'. Is going to London tomorrow and will see the Lying in State but won't try to see the funeral procession. Reminisces about other funeral processions she has seen. Remembers when she and her mother were having tea with Queen Alexandria and King Edward came in to tell the Queen that her father, the King of Denmark had died. Is glad that the mourning does not go on for as long as it used to. When King Edward died, she and her parents were in mourning for six months and in half mourning for another six. Speculates about the coronation. Discusses various people she has seen.

Thanks Beaton for the lovely photograph. Stephen is delighted with it. Will not be using it for the "Weekly Dispatch" as they only need a small head. Gives suggestions for improving the photographs. If Beaton carries out these instructions and prints a smaller size, she would like to buy half a dozen of them.

Typescript letter signed to Beaton, from Rome

Asks if Beaton would like to participate in a show called 'Masterpieces of Modern Photography' organised by two friends of his. They want Beaton to pick his 'Favourite, Best, Most Characteristic' and send it, mounted. They then want each photographer to choose two or three examples of the work of a young photographer. The show will be in two sections, the masters and the young photographers. They are in a winter flat. Pavlik is working in preparation for exhibitions. Is doing lots of painting. With an autograph note from Beaton to Eileen.
