April 1971 - June 1972

Patterned notebook. Includes entries relating to Sylvia Henley (1882-1980); Francis Rose (1909-1979); 'On A Clear Day You Can See Forever' (1970); a soiree at Windsor Castle in April 1972; the Duke of Windsor's funeral on the 5th June, 1972; a garden party at Buckingham Palace; and a visit to Fontmell Magna, Dorset.

Art and Adornment

Typescript essay on the subject of beauty and adornment. Beaton writes that the decorative needs of women vary according to their distinguishing features. The trick is to give such features universal appeal through accentuating their individuality. Each woman must discover her own methods of achieving this; each must assert her own personality. The use of adornment and artifice can help to draw attention to what the observer should see, but these things should, nevertheless, be used with caution lest they be misapplied. The word 'unique' should substitute the word 'beauty', which is an over-used abstraction. Disproportion should represent the harmony of the universe, while ugliness should be recognised as an expression of a woman divided against herself.

Arthur P. Weiser. Typescript letter signed to Beaton, from New York.

It is easy to reminisce about their associations at Vogue because of the special character of Beaton's photographs. It is extremely difficult to differentiate between the work of younger photographers. Beaton's "good taste and elegant composition combined with your own particular touches of ultra-feminine chi-chi" means that he has not been successfully imitated. Would be glad to work with him on layouts for his book. Has always loved and admired the things he has done.

Weiser, Arthur P (fl 1949)

Ashcombe

Documents relating to Ashcombe House, a Georgian manor house, situated in Wiltshire, England, which Beaton rented from 1930 onwards. When the lease expired in 1945, Beaton was forced to leave the property. His book, "Ashcombe: The Story of a Fifteen-Year Lease", was later published in 1949. The documents relate primarily to the termination of Beaton's lease in 1945.
