Papers of Sir Cecil Beaton

Aspects of American life that baffle me

Typescript essay, in which Beaton considers certain features of American life. He acknowledges that all travellers find the customs of foreign countries strange. In his case, for instance, he finds peculiar American catchphrases; the American obsession with wrapping everything in cellophane or aluminium foil; the size of their newspapers; their love of air conditioning; and excessive use of sticky tape at Christmas.

Assorted notes

Includes a torn strip of envelope with the address of the dancer Cléo de Mérode (1875-1966); a list of photograph numbers; and a diagram of a circle with various names around the perimeter, including 'Cecil', 'Irene Worth', 'Diana', 'Kistie', and Leo d'Erl.

Aubrey Ensor. Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from Sussex.

Thanks Beaton for his letter. Praises his career. Is sad that it did not happen in his mother's lifetime. Beaton's father would have been inwardly proud and pleased as well. Reminisces about the Sunday lunches at Templewood Avenue. Feels that all the magazines he used to take have out priced themselves. Was exciting to see Beaton outside Buckingham Palace.
