The Hancock Prize was founded in 1896 at the suggestion of Canon Tristram of Durham, for an essay describing the observations in any branch of natural history made during the course of a day's ramble in the country or on the coast. In 1909 Jeffreys was awarded the second prize. In 1910 he shared the prize.Both essays are in the notebook: ' A ramble in late August in the Birtley district' and 'A visit to Fatfield in quest of natural objects, June 11th, 1910'.
