Scope and content
Owing to Cambridge procedure and the timing of meetings, does not think that a firm answer from Cambridge could be given before Nov. The point about the next quinquennial statement is 'new to me': had understood that the money for the Institute was unlikely to come from the U.G.C. Sir William [Hodge] 'mentioned certain negotiations that the Royal Society were then [two months ago] in the process of making as a possible source' of funding. Thinks that an answer on the principle of the expansion of astronomical activities can only be obtained when the question is 'dissociated' from the source of the funds.
