Scope and content

Typescript review by Beaton of the South Bank Exhibition, for the 1951 Festival of Britain. Beaton praises the Exhibition for being entertaining and stimulating, although there are certain flaws, for instance, the under-representation of painters in comparison to architects. The Exhibition will not appeal to the traditionalist, yet anyone without preconceived ideas of taste will appreciate the vitality and innovation evident in the pieces on display. After the disappointments of the post-war years, Beaton writes, it is "an agreeable experince to blow one's own trumpet". Written for 'Vogue' magazine.
