Scope and content
Arrived back from London yesterday and it is 'glorious'. If Beaton wants to visit, there is a place for him now. Has bought an apartment and is furnishing it now. Feels it was a wise investment and they both love Verbier. Was in London for eight days and saw Dr. Gottfried five times. He said that Capote's pain was caused by nicotine poisoning. Has stopped smoking completely and takes about thirty pills a day. Is still in pain, 'like having an endless series of little heart attacks'. Dr. G. said it was a good thing he had been 'drinking those martinis as they acted as an antidote to the poison'. Rang Eileen to see if he could stay at Pelham Place, but someone was staying there. Sonia Pitt-Rivers came for dinner. Thinks that the marriage is not a success. Saw K. Tynan and Penelope Gilliatt. Went to see "Doce Vita" and thought it was 'pretentious, fake-arty and boring'.
