Scope and content
Finds it hard to write letters as time goes on, but has been thinking of Beaton, so will write a 'resume of the season's doings'. Is waiting to hear if she can have tickets for "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Wants to go as a treat for Artemis and also because Cannon Collins is 'due to pee in front of the Queen in protest'. Is just back from staying with Eric Bessborough and his 'poor cookoo wife'. Is going to Chichester twice. First to see "Saint Joan", played by Lady Olivier. Is 'against her physically and morally', but 'never drew a breath that wasn't through lumps in the throat, never saw the actors except unfocused through tears'. Discusses the play and costumes. "Uncle Vania" was a masterpiece too. Did not like "The Little Hump-backed Horse". The P.M. and 'his good lady' came to lunch and it went well. Paddy, Annie, Fred Warner, June and Michael Astor came. Discusses the lunch. Ponders the election and who is likely to win. Relates incidents that happened at the lunch. Discusses plans for the summer.
