Scope and content
Wishes Beaton had never left and that he could have stayed on after the others. Tells him that he felt "wretched" at the station. Informs him that he would rather be unhappy at missing him than not know him at all. Feels Beaton is much more independent than himself, but isn't worried so long as he goes on liking him "a bit". Informs Beaton that he was very popular during his visit: his father liked him a lot but didn't care for Jack. Tells him not to make himself write. Hates to think of him being sad, it is worse than being sad himself. Thinks that Beaton is probably feeling "strong and vigorous" by now, and if so asks him "not to think too hardly of me for writing like this".
