Scope and content
Apologises for the "disgraceful" lack of correspondence on his part. It was not entirely due to laziness, as he was forced to work too much in the last few months. Was delighted to hear of Beaton's success. Has been leading a "beautiful but cloistered life" in the studio. Enjoyed his business trip to Berlin. Discusses a production of the "Tales of Hoffmann" which included "revolving stages revolving ceaselessly to no purpose". The first night of "Helen" was a great thrill. Has had a great deal of appreciation. Is tired of working and longs for "one of those glorious week ends at Ashcombe". Asks Beaton to hurry up as they all want to see him.
