Scope and content
Had become anxious as to the fate of AJC, especially with the strong autumn gales which cause so many shipwrecks, so was pleased to receive the letter. Is too busy with his Consul work to be able to visit, especially as he is taking his family to Switzerland this year. Gives news of the academic progress of his son. Complains about the cold weather in Paris. Asks for a number of books to be sent to him if at all possible and also gives a detailed list of a friend's collection of Memoirs of the Academy at St Petersburg which are being sold at a very cheap price. Suggests that Cambrige University might be interested. Believes that AJC will enjoy his visit to Germany and bemoans the loss of these beautiful regions by France. Gives news of recent social events, including theatre trips, his family and also comments that he has taken up theological study.
