Note
The St. John's College society for geographers and land economists, known as the Purchas Society, was formed in 1948 and pioneered initially by Professor G. Daniel and Dr. B.H. Farmer. Named in honour of Samuel Purchas (BA 1597), English cleric and author of " Hakluytus Postumus or Purchas his Pilgrimes", the Society continues to organise events for its members, including an annual dinner, lectures by visiting speakers, and the 'Purchas Paddlings'.
