Note
The Sermon was translated by 'Mr. secretary' Pace after being preached on May 12 1521. Fisher's first major attack on Luther 'A confutation of the Lutheran Assertion' was issued in 1523 (D.N.B. sub. Fisher). For dating see C. J. Gray Letters of Bishop Fisher' The Library 3rd series no. 13 p 133ff., and the following: 'I can offer some further information about the Sharp-Metcalf letters reprinted by G. J. Gray'.
The letter can be dated to May 1521. It deals with sending Fisher's sermon to Richard Pace for translation into Latin. Gray was not aware that a letter from Pace to Leo X of 1 June 1521 exists, in which Pace says that he encloses his translation of Fisher's sermon for the Pope's perusal. This is reprinted in Monumenta Reformationis Lutheranae, ed P. Balan (Berlin, 1884). Since it is clear that Pace's translation was finished by 1 June, Sharp's letter must have been written before then' (ex. inf. Richard Rex Trinity College Cambridge).
